What is The PAP Corps?

1952, a small group of courageous cancer cure activists driven by the lack of early detection and treatment of cancer, formed a group whose single goal was to raise money for the Dade County Cancer Institute.  The cancer activists continued raising funds for researchers to fight all types of cancer at what had become the Miami Cancer Research Institute. In 1961, Dr. George Papanicolaou was invited to Miami to lead and develop the Institute which was renamed the Papanicolaou Cancer Research Institute in 1962. The cancer activists formally became The Papanicolaou Women’s Corps and are now known as The Pap Corps Champions for Cancer Research.

Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine opened in 1992. It is the only Cancer Center of Excellence and university-based cancer facility in South Florida. Here, physicians and researchers are transforming cancer research and treatment in South Florida and beyond. Proceeds from The Pap Corps fundraisers go to Sylvester Cancer Center.  As the PAP Corps celebrated its 66th anniversary, it had grown to over 20,000 women and men across 53 chapters throughout South Florida, raising over $110 million.

We, in Ponte Vecchio West, conduct many fundraising events throughout the year.  We hope that you will support our efforts.  We also welcome you, both women and men, as members. You too can follow our dream – A World Without Cancer!

Our Chapter also has ongoing events that are the backbone of our Fundraising Activities:

Birthday Greetings, Tribute cards, and Mah Jongg cards.

Birthday Greetings are one of our biggest money makers.  PVW PAP sends a colorful Birthday Greeting, which lists the names of those who sent the greetings.  A form listing the names of your friends and neighbors celebrating a birthday in that quarter of the year, is sent by email and distributed in A View from Paradise.  Please make sure we have your current email address as well as the birth date (month day only) on file.  To participate in this program, pay $1.00 for each listed name that you want to send a birthday wish.  As an option, you may choose to send a greeting to every name on this list for only $50.00 per quarter.

Tribute Cards for all occasions may be purchased one at a time, or in quantity, and sent as you need them.  If you wish. cards can be sent by any of our chairmen if you are not here to purchase them in person.  The sale of Tribute Cards through our chapter raisedover $3500.00 last year.

Mah Jongg cards are sold in the fall at the listed price.  They are mailed to you in the spring
